Portage, IN – A white Chevrolet Equinox crashed into a Portage Fire Department ambulance Wednesday afternoon, injuring five people.

Police say the SUV was speeding south on the Willowcreek Bypass when it lost control on snow-covered roads. The vehicle crossed the center line, sideswiped a delivery truck, and struck the ambulance head-on.

The ambulance was returning to the fire station with no patients onboard. Four Portage Fire Department medics were inside. Two reported pain, but no serious injuries were noted. All four were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The SUV driver, a 36-year-old Hobart man, was not wearing a seatbelt. The crash ejected him into the passenger seat, causing a serious head injury. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed. The Willowcreek Bypass closed for over an hour before reopening.

Authorities remind drivers to reduce speed during winter conditions.
