Amarillo, TX – A dense fog advisory remains in effect through late Wednesday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions across Amarillo and surrounding areas. Drivers are urged to use low-beam headlights and reduce speed to navigate visibility reduced to under half a mile in some locations.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Amarillo, the foggy conditions are compounded by freezing temperatures, increasing the risk of slick roadways, especially along I-40 and major county roads. The advisory is expected to lift by late morning, but residual patchy fog may linger into the afternoon.

Beyond Wednesday, travelers can expect improved conditions. Christmas Day will turn mostly sunny with a high near 53°F. Tonight brings a slight chance of rain, with patchy fog redeveloping early Thursday morning. Thursday will clear by mid-morning, with temperatures peaking at 51°F and calmer winds.

Looking toward the weekend, Amarillo is forecasted to see mostly sunny skies with highs reaching 61°F by Saturday. Overnight lows will remain in the mid-30s, providing a welcome break from the freezing fog impacting holiday travel.

For those driving through the Panhandle, especially along I-40, continue exercising caution until visibility improves later today. Prepare for changing conditions by monitoring local weather updates and allowing extra time for travel.
