Amarillo, Texas – Near-record heat and dangerous fire conditions will intensify by mid-afternoon Saturday, with temperatures approaching 100°F and winds capable of rapidly spreading flames across the Panhandle.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, highs will reach the mid to upper 90s Friday before climbing to 98 to 101°F Saturday across cities including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Canadian. Relative humidity is expected to drop below 10 percent while southwest winds gust up to 30 mph, creating critical fire weather conditions between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday.
The combination of extreme heat, dry օդ, and gusty winds significantly increases the risk of fast-moving wildfires. Open areas, հատկապես grasslands near roadways such as I-40 and US-287, are most vulnerable to rapid fire spread.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could spark flames, including using equipment that produces heat or sparks. Heat illness is also a concern, particularly for those working outside during peak afternoon hours.
Conditions remain hot and dry into early next week, with additional fire weather concerns possible if winds persist.
