AMARILLO, Texas – A stormy start to the week is expected across the Texas Panhandle as scattered thunderstorms move through Amarillo late Sunday into Tuesday, bringing gusty winds and brief heavy rain. Winds could reach 20 mph, with the greatest storm chances coming Monday afternoon and again overnight into Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, isolated showers may develop before sunrise Monday, followed by a 50% chance of thunderstorms later in the day. While severe weather isn’t likely, localized downpours could cause ponding on roads, especially along I-40 and U.S. 287.

Conditions should gradually clear by midweek, with partly cloudy skies and highs near 76°F Wednesday. Sunshine returns Thursday and Friday as temperatures climb into the mid-80s, providing a brief warm-up before the next front approaches this weekend.

Drivers are urged to slow down during rain and avoid flooded intersections. Outdoor plans should be flexible through Tuesday night. Additional storm chances could return late in the week as Gulf moisture lifts north.
