Amarillo, Texas – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across the Texas Panhandle Monday night, bringing threats of golf ball–sized hail and damaging winds up to 70 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms are most likely between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. in Amarillo, Dumas, Borger, and surrounding western Panhandle towns. The threat then shifts east overnight, with Canadian, Perryton, and Wheeler most at risk between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The storms carry the potential for hail nearly two inches in diameter and damaging wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and power lines. While the tornado risk remains very low, forecasters caution residents to secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages.
Travelers on I-40 near Amarillo and U.S. 83 near Canadian should be ready for sudden heavy rain, reduced visibility, and strong crosswinds. Residents are urged to charge devices and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts overnight.
The severe threat lingers into early Tuesday morning, and additional advisories may be issued if storm activity increases.
