Amarillo, Texas – Winterlike conditions are making a return across the Texas Panhandle today, bringing a colder feel to area roads as temperatures settle back into the 30s and low 40s around Amarillo. While conditions remain dry, brisk winds are adding a bite to the air and increasing discomfort for drivers and anyone traveling during the morning and evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, winds will run between 5 and 10 mph across northern portions of the Panhandle and 10 to 15 mph farther south, making temperatures feel 5 to 10 degrees colder than the actual readings. Highs around Amarillo are expected to top out near the upper 30s, well below seasonal averages.

Roadways including I-40, U.S. 287, and Loop 335 may feel colder than expected, particularly on elevated stretches and open areas where winds are strongest. While ice is not anticipated, drivers should remain alert for reduced tire traction during early morning hours when pavement temperatures are lowest. Officials also advise dressing for cold conditions if traveling longer distances or experiencing vehicle issues.

Temperatures moderate slightly later in the week, but today’s chill serves as a reminder that winter is far from over across the Panhandle. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates for additional cold mornings or changing conditions later this week.
