Amarillo, Texas – Heavy snow continues to blanket the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, creating hazardous travel conditions that are expected to persist through Sunday midday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon Sunday for much of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected across the region, with the highest totals affecting areas from Amarillo and Canyon to Pampa, Borger, Perryton, and Guymon.
Across the Panhandles, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are already creating dangerous conditions. Bridges and overpasses are especially slick, and additional snowfall through Saturday night could make travel very difficult or nearly impossible at times. TxDOT and ODOT crews are continuing treatment and plowing efforts, but persistent snowfall may limit improvement on major routes such as Interstate 40, U.S. Highway 287, and U.S. Highway 60.
In the Amarillo area, residents should expect prolonged impacts on travel, deliveries, and emergency response times. Officials urge drivers to delay all non-essential travel, particularly Saturday night when road conditions may worsen. Those who must travel should carry flashlights, food, water, and cold-weather gear in case of delays or emergencies.
The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through noon Sunday, with conditions expected to slowly improve afterward. Residents should continue monitoring local alerts and check road conditions before traveling by calling Texas or Oklahoma road information lines as conditions remain dangerous across the region.
