Amarillo, TX – Residents across the Texas Panhandle should prepare for strong winds Saturday, October 4, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the strongest gusts—exceeding 35 mph—are expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. Winds will generally come from the southwest during the day before shifting southward by evening. Forecasters warn breezy conditions could persist into the night, with gusts up to 30 mph possible after dark.

Communities including Amarillo, Dumas, Borger, and Perryton could see wind speeds ranging from 30 to 35 mph, while higher gusts of 35–40 mph are likely near Dalhart and Boise City. Areas farther southeast, including Wellington and Clarendon, are forecast to see gusts between 20 and 25 mph.

Officials caution that unsecured outdoor items may be blown around and encourage residents to tie down or bring in loose belongings. The NWS also highlights the risk of fire starts and rapid fire spread due to dry conditions combined with strong winds.

Drivers should use extra caution on highways, especially those traveling in high-profile vehicles. Visibility may be reduced at times due to blowing dust.

The National Weather Service urges residents to practice fire safety, avoid outdoor burning, and remain alert to updated forecasts throughout the day.
