Unseasonably warm weather continues across the Texas Panhandle today, with temperatures climbing well into the mid-60s to low-70s on this Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo. The region remains locked into a warm December pattern that has kept temperatures above average for several consecutive days.
According to the National Weather Service, Amarillo is expected to reach the upper 60s, while nearby cities such as Dalhart, Borger, Pampa, and Perryton may top out near 70°. Palo Duro Canyon is forecast to reach 73°, nearly 20 degrees above normal for mid-December. Average highs this time of year sit around 51° in Amarillo, 50° in Dalhart, and 52° in Borger.
Winds will be breezier than earlier in the week, with southwest winds strengthening to 15 to 25 mph, occasionally producing higher gusts. Despite the warmth, skies remain mostly clear, and no precipitation is expected.
Today’s warm spell is part of a broader pattern driven by a ridge of high pressure over the southern United States, which continues to pump warm, dry air into the Panhandle. The trend is expected to persist into Thursday before temperatures gradually ease closer to seasonal levels toward the weekend.
Residents planning outdoor activities should prepare for the breezy conditions, which may create elevated fire-weather concerns in areas with dry grasses.
More forecast updates are expected as forecasters track potential changes heading into the holiday period.
