Amarillo, Texas – Scattered thunderstorms will develop across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this afternoon and continue into tonight, bringing the potential for heavy rain, small hail, and strong wind gusts. While the chance for severe weather is low, localized flooding remains a concern in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storm chances increase after 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the most widespread activity expected late tonight. Gusts up to 40 mph could create hazardous travel along I-40 and U.S. 287, particularly in Potter, Randall, and Moore counties.

Amarillo may see thunderstorms into early Wednesday morning before drier air moves in. Communities such as Dumas, Dalhart, and Guymon could also experience downpours that reduce visibility on rural highways. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to secure outdoor items ahead of stronger wind gusts.

The NWS notes that additional storm chances return this weekend into early next week, keeping the threat of flooding and gusty winds in play for the Panhandles.
