Amarillo, Texas – Showers and storms are lingering across the Texas Panhandle this morning, with additional thunderstorms expected to redevelop later this afternoon and evening across the southeast. A few of those storms may become severe, with hail up to half-dollar size and damaging winds topping 70 mph possible through 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the greatest threat for severe weather is centered over Wheeler, Clarendon, and Wellington, where storm chances are highest between 5 and 10 p.m. The rest of the region, including Amarillo, Dalhart, and Guymon, will see lower storm potential, though morning showers and cloudy skies could still slow commutes and reduce visibility.

Travelers along U.S. Highway 83 and I-40 should be alert for sudden downpours and strong crosswinds this evening. Emergency officials recommend keeping devices charged and having multiple ways to receive alerts in case warnings are issued.

Temperatures will be cooler today, with highs ranging from the mid-70s in Dalhart and Guymon to upper 70s in Amarillo and Pampa. Skies should begin to clear from west to east by late evening.

Storm chances diminish after tonight, but unsettled weather could return by midweek.
