Amarillo, Texas – A chilly autumn night will bring widespread frost to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles early Tuesday as calm winds and clear skies allow temperatures to drop near freezing. The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Frost Advisory in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Tuesday for much of the region, including Amarillo, Hereford, Borger, Guymon, Dumas, and Beaver.
Forecasters expect early-morning lows around 32°F, producing frost formation across open fields and sheltered valleys. The coldest spots will be along the Canadian River valley and the western high plains, where lingering moisture could intensify frost on exposed surfaces.
According to the National Weather Service, the frost may damage or kill sensitive outdoor plants and could mark the end of the growing season across parts of the High Plains. Residents are urged to cover tender vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and wrap or drain sprinkler systems to prevent freeze-related damage.
Local emergency officials advise pet owners and farmers to ensure animals have sheltered access to water overnight. Temperatures will recover into the upper 50s by Tuesday afternoon under sunny skies, with another cool night expected midweek before a gradual warming trend into the weekend.
