Amarillo, TX – A powerful cold front will send temperatures tumbling across the Texas Panhandle this weekend, ending the week’s warmth with a sharp blast of fall air. The National Weather Service in Amarillo says highs Friday will reach the 70s before plunging by 20 to 25 degrees behind the front Saturday night into Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the front will move through the region Saturday afternoon, bringing gusty north winds and much colder air. Lows early Sunday are expected to dip into the mid-20s to lower 30s for most of the area, marking the first widespread freeze of the season. Highs Sunday will struggle to reach the low 50s under sunny skies and brisk northerly winds.
Forecasters warn that subfreezing temperatures could damage sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing. Residents across Amarillo, Dumas, Borger, and Pampa are urged to cover plants, insulate exposed pipes, and bring pets indoors ahead of the cold blast. The front will also make for challenging travel Saturday evening, as crosswinds on I-27, I-40, and U.S. 287 may impact high-profile vehicles.
Friday remains warm and dry, offering the last comfortable afternoon before the cold air arrives. Winds will shift sharply to the north Saturday, gusting 25 to 35 mph, as the cold front sweeps through. The chill lingers into early next week, with lows likely remaining near or below freezing into Tuesday morning.
By Sunday afternoon, sunshine will return—but with a much different feel. After several days near 70, the Panhandle will be firmly back in late-fall territory.
