AMARILLO, Texas – After a warm Columbus Day holiday across the Texas Panhandle, a quick round of showers could bring slick spots and gusty winds along I-40 by early Tuesday before sunshine and cooler fall air take over midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, scattered rain and isolated thunderstorms will develop late Monday into early Tuesday as a weak front sweeps across the region. Gusts could reach 25 mph, and brief downpours may cause reduced visibility for early commuters and school buses returning after the long weekend. Drivers should plan for slower travel, especially east of Amarillo along U.S. 287 and I-40.

The weather clears quickly Tuesday afternoon, ushering in a stretch of classic fall conditions — crisp mornings, sunny skies, and highs near 80 degrees through Thursday. “We’ll see a noticeable drop in humidity with calm, pleasant afternoons by midweek,” the weather service noted.

Residents planning outdoor activities or trips to area pumpkin patches and parks will find ideal weather by Wednesday, though mornings could feel cool enough for light jackets. No frost or freeze risk is expected yet, but temperatures trend cooler next weekend as October’s second half begins.

Energy providers and city crews report no weather-related concerns, but officials urge residents to check gutters and yard drains after Monday’s rain to prevent localized pooling.
