AMARILLO, Texas – A calm, clear night will bring the first frost of the season to the northern Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles early Sunday, marking a sharp turn toward fall. The National Weather Service in Amarillo said a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Sunday for Dallam, Sherman, Hansford, Hartley, Moore, Ochiltree, Cimarron, Texas, and Beaver counties, including Guymon, Dumas, Dalhart, and Perryton.
According to the Weather Service, temperatures will fall to near 34 degrees in many rural and sheltered areas, allowing frost to form on grass, rooftops, and vehicles before sunrise. The calmest locations north and west of Amarillo will see the heaviest frost coverage.
Officials advised residents to cover tender plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect outdoor faucets ahead of the early-morning chill. Agricultural producers across the region noted that this frost will likely end the 2025 growing season for much of the Panhandle. Motorists should allow extra time to scrape frost from windshields on highways such as U.S. 54, U.S. 87, and U.S. 412.
According to the National Weather Service, sunshine will quickly warm the region Sunday afternoon, with highs in the upper 60s. A warming trend continues into midweek under dry skies.
