Amarillo, TX – Forecasters are tracking a low-end severe weather threat across the Texas Panhandle today, with the highest risk for storms occurring between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

While the overall severe potential remains Level 1 out of 5, storms that do form may produce large hail up to ping pong ball size and wind gusts up to 60 mph. The greatest risk area includes Amarillo, Claude, Wellington, and Clarendon, with activity expected to develop late this afternoon and continue into the evening.

The tornado threat is very low, though it cannot be completely ruled out. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be ready to take shelter if severe weather develops nearby.

Most storms are expected to weaken overnight, giving way to calmer and cooler conditions by Friday morning.
