Amarillo, Texas – A strong cold front is moving across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Friday, bringing a taste of fall with sharply cooler temperatures and a boost in rain chances. Some areas could see temperatures fall 10 to 20 degrees below normal by afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the front is tapping into higher moisture levels, increasing the likelihood of rain through Friday evening. The greatest chances are across the northern Panhandle, where Guymon, Boise City, and Beaver may see showers at times, while southern locations like Hereford and Wellington may stay drier.

By late morning, rain chances rise into the 40 to 60 percent range in Canadian, Dalhart, and Guymon, peaking during the afternoon before tapering into the evening. Precipitation is expected to remain light to moderate, but travel could be affected by slick roads and brief reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to allow extra travel time and keep rain gear handy. Even those who miss out on showers will notice the cooler air sweeping in behind the front, bringing relief from recent late-summer heat.

The weather service said cooler conditions will linger into the weekend, with additional advisories possible if moisture lingers.
