Texas – The quiet streak of mild December weather continues across the Texas Panhandle, but residents should prepare for a quick weekend temperature swing as a stronger cold front moves in late Saturday.
Under a persistent high-pressure ridge, Amarillo and surrounding areas have enjoyed warmer-than-normal highs this week, reaching the upper 60s to near 70°F under sunny skies. However, the National Weather Service in Amarillo says this calm pattern will briefly break as a dry cold front arrives Friday night, followed by a stronger front on Saturday evening.
Expect breezy north winds and a sharp temperature drop Saturday night. Highs will tumble from the upper 60s on Saturday to the low 50s Sunday, with morning lows dipping into the 20s. Despite the chill, skies will stay mostly clear, keeping precipitation chances below 5%.
Travel and outdoor activities should remain unaffected, though those camping or attending evening events will want layers ready for a 30-degree swing. Conditions quickly moderate again by Monday, returning to sunny highs in the 60s through midweek.
