Amarillo, Texas – Rain is expected to move across the Texas Panhandle tonight into Saturday, though amounts will vary significantly from west to east, with the highest totals forecast in the southeastern counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, most central and western parts of the Panhandle are expected to receive less than a quarter inch of rainfall. Areas near Dalhart, Stratford and Boise City may see minimal measurable precipitation as drier air limits totals.
Higher rainfall amounts are more likely toward the southeast Texas Panhandle, including areas near Canadian, Wheeler and Wellington. Forecast guidance indicates totals between 0.25 and 0.50 inches in these locations, with isolated spots potentially receiving more than half an inch.
Forecasters say an upper-level low pressure system is moving quickly across Texas, with the best moisture remaining southeast of Amarillo. Dry air in the western Panhandle may cause some rain to evaporate before reaching the ground, limiting accumulations along US-87, US-385 and portions of Interstate 40 west of Amarillo.
Roadways including I-40, I-27 and US-287 could become wet overnight and into Saturday morning, especially in southeastern counties where rainfall rates may briefly increase.
While widespread flooding is not anticipated, motorists should watch for slick pavement and minor ponding in low-lying areas during periods of steadier rain.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, as slight shifts in storm track could impact rainfall totals across the region.
