Amarillo, Texas – Winds strong enough to push flames out of control could ignite dangerous wildfire conditions across the Texas Panhandle within hours Saturday, especially along open stretches of I-40 where gusts may hit 45 mph by midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, southerly winds will increase rapidly by late morning, peaking between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday with sustained dry air and relative humidity dropping as low as 15%. That combination creates a volatile setup for fast-moving grassfires across the northern Panhandle, including Dallam, Sherman, and Hansford counties.

Communities from Boise City and Guymon to Dalhart and Stratford face the highest risk, where gusts between 40 and 45 mph could quickly carry flames across dry fields. Amarillo, Vega, and Borger will also see gusts near 30 mph, enough to spread sparks along roadways and near power equipment.

Loose debris may blow into roadways, reducing visibility for drivers, particularly along I-40 and U.S. 287. Fire officials urge residents to avoid dragging trailer chains, parking on dry grass, or using equipment that can spark.

Any fire that starts could spread rapidly and threaten structures within minutes. Emergency managers warn that additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen into the evening.
