Amarillo, Texas — Residents across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for a windy and cooler Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo. While a few light sprinkles were observed early this morning across parts of the northeastern Panhandles, the remainder of the day will be dry, breezy, and noticeably cooler.
High temperatures today will range mainly through the lower to mid-50s, including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Dalhart, Guymon, and Beaver. Despite sunshine developing, strong north winds will make conditions feel cooler than the thermometer suggests.
Sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching or exceeding 35 mph, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. The strongest winds are likely along major travel corridors such as Interstate 40, US Highway 287, US-54, and State Highway 136. Motorists, particularly those driving high-profile vehicles, should use extra caution due to crosswinds.
Loose outdoor items may be blown around, and the gusty conditions could make travel more difficult at times. The National Weather Service also notes low-end elevated fire weather conditions, though widespread critical fire danger is not anticipated today.
Looking ahead, a significant warm-up is expected for the remainder of the work week. Thursday will bring sunny skies with highs climbing into the mid-60s to lower 70s, followed by even warmer conditions on Friday, with highs reaching the upper 60s to mid-70s. Overnight lows will remain mild, generally in the 30s to near 40 degrees.
Dry weather is expected to continue through the end of the work week, providing a welcome break after today’s blustery conditions. Residents are encouraged to secure loose items, drive cautiously, and stay updated through weather.gov/ama for any changes.
