Amarillo, Texas – A brief warm-up across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles will give way to cooler temperatures and a low snow chance by Friday, potentially affecting travel near major roadways including Interstate 40 and U.S. 287.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, drier and warmer conditions are expected to hold through Wednesday before a new weather system pushes across the Panhandles on Thursday. Afternoon highs are forecast to cool significantly behind the system, with some locations dropping back into the 30s by Friday.

Forecast graphics from NWS Amarillo show Tuesday highs ranging from 40 to 49 degrees, warming to 44 to 57 degrees on Wednesday. Thursday brings cooler conditions, with highs between 37 and 50 degrees as the system moves through the region. By Friday, temperatures are expected to range from 39 to 52 degrees.

The National Weather Service notes a 10–15% chance of snow showers Friday, primarily across the northern and eastern Panhandles. While accumulation is not currently indicated, brief snow showers could reduce visibility and create slick spots on elevated roadways, especially during the morning commute along I-40, I-27, and connecting highways.

Saturday is forecast to remain cool, with highs generally between 30 and 50 degrees, as lingering clouds move through the region.

Officials emphasize that forecast confidence on snowfall remains low and that impacts are expected to be limited. However, drivers and commuters are encouraged to monitor updates if traveling early Friday, particularly in areas north and east of Amarillo.

This weather pattern may be relevant for students, young workers, and commuters who rely on early-morning travel along Panhandle highways.

Residents are advised to stay updated through official National Weather Service channels as the system approaches.
