Amarillo, Texas – A strong cold front moving through the Texas Panhandle will bring gusty winds Sunday followed by single-digit wind chills early next week, creating hazardous outdoor conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, northerly winds will increase Sunday morning behind the cold front, with the strongest wind gusts expected between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph are forecast, with a 40% to 60% chance of wind gusts exceeding 45 mph across much of the Panhandle.

Forecasters say the strong winds may blow around unsecured objects, including holiday decorations, and could make travel difficult on east–west roadways, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

Behind the front, much colder air will settle into the region. Wind chills Monday morning are expected to fall into the single digits, with some locations across the northern Panhandle dipping near or below zero. Another round of single-digit wind chills is forecast Tuesday morning, even as winds gradually ease.

High temperatures on Sunday are expected to occur early in the day before falling sharply, with Monday highs only reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s. The National Weather Service notes a very low chance (10–20%) of flurries or light sprinkles Sunday morning, mainly across the far northern Panhandle.

The timing places the greatest cold exposure risk during Sunday afternoon outdoor activities and early morning commutes Monday and Tuesday, especially for outdoor workers, students, and those without adequate shelter.

Residents are urged to secure loose items, limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and bring pets indoors as the cold settles in.
