Amarillo, Texas – Unseasonably warm weather is expected across Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle today, with temperatures running 15 to 20 degrees above normal for mid-January, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.
Forecasters say afternoon high temperatures will climb into the upper 60s to mid-70s, making for one of the warmest days so far this month. In Amarillo, highs are forecast near 75 degrees, while nearby communities such as Borger and Dalhart could reach the mid to upper 70s.
Winds are expected to remain out of the south to southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour, adding a mild breeze but not enough to significantly impact outdoor conditions. Skies will remain mostly clear, contributing to the warmer daytime temperatures.
The National Weather Service notes that today’s warmth brings record considerations. Amarillo’s record high for the date is 75 degrees, giving the city about a 15 percent chance of tying or breaking the daily record. Dalhart and Borger each have record highs of 77 degrees, though the probability of reaching those records remains below 5 percent.
At Palo Duro Canyon, temperatures are also forecast to reach around 75 degrees, creating favorable conditions for outdoor recreation.
Despite the warmth, officials remind residents that January weather can change quickly. Cooler conditions are expected to return later in the forecast period, though no hazardous weather is currently anticipated today.
Residents planning outdoor activities, travel, or work across the Amarillo area can expect pleasant and mild conditions, unusual for this time of year.
