Amarillo, TX — Unseasonably warm weather is expected to continue across Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle as the region heads into the Christmas holiday, with temperatures climbing well above normal and potential record highs possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, next week will begin warm and remain warm through Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25, with little to no weather-related impacts expected at this time. While conditions appear favorable for travel and outdoor plans, forecasters say breezy winds and near-record temperatures will be worth monitoring.
High temperatures across the Amarillo area are forecast to reach the upper 70s on Monday, followed by highs ranging from 67 to 79 degrees on Tuesday. The warming trend continues into midweek, with Wednesday highs between 73 and 80 degrees, accompanied by southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph.
On Christmas Day, temperatures are expected to remain mild, with highs again ranging from 72 to 80 degrees across the Texas Panhandle. Winds on Thursday are forecast from the west at 10 to 20 mph, adding a breezy feel but not enough to significantly impact holiday activities.
The National Weather Service notes that these temperatures are well above late-December averages, increasing the potential for record or near-record highs, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. No precipitation is currently forecast, and impacts such as snow, ice, or severe weather are not expected.
Forecasters attribute the warmth to a persistent weather pattern allowing mild air to dominate the central Plains, limiting cold air intrusions typical for this time of year.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the favorable holiday weather while staying updated on forecast changes. The latest updates and climate information are available at weather.gov/ama.
