Amarillo, TX – A cold front sweeping through the Texas Panhandle early Wednesday has brought cooler and more seasonable air, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Amarillo.

High temperatures today are forecast to range between 52°F and 58°F across the region—roughly 2 to 6 degrees above normal for mid-December. Morning lows dipped into the 30s and low 40s, making for a brisk start to the day.

Despite the cool-down, forecasters say Thursday is expected to be the warmest day of the week, with highs climbing well into the 60s under mostly sunny skies before another temperature drop arrives heading into the weekend.

“This front has knocked us back to near-normal temperatures today,” the NWS said in its morning update. “Even so, conditions remain mild for December, and another warm-up is expected Thursday before our next front.”

Winds will remain light to moderate out of the north, turning southerly later tonight as warmer air begins to return. Skies will stay mostly clear, making for pleasant but cool afternoon conditions across cities like Amarillo, Dalhart, Dumas, and Pampa.

Motorists should be aware of patchy frost early this morning, especially in rural areas, before temperatures rebound later in the day.

Looking ahead, Friday and the weekend are expected to bring seasonably cool, dry weather, setting up a calm stretch before potential precipitation returns early next week.
