Amarillo, Texas – Heavy thunderstorms are firing up across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this afternoon, with the strongest storms expected to impact Amarillo and surrounding areas through 6 p.m. Tuesday. Dangerous lightning, strong wind gusts, and heavy rainfall could disrupt travel and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the greatest concentration of storms will develop from near Hereford to Amarillo and up toward Liberal, Oklahoma. Localized rainfall could quickly flood streets, while wind gusts and lightning pose safety risks for drivers and anyone outside. Though severe storms are not widespread, a couple of cells could bring damaging winds and hail approaching one inch in diameter.

Cities most at risk include Amarillo, Hereford, and surrounding communities along major highways such as US-60 and I-40. Residents should watch for rapidly changing conditions, avoid flooded roads, and secure loose outdoor items. If thunder roars, move indoors and stay away from windows. Keep devices charged in case of brief power outages and check local alerts for real-time updates.

Today’s storms mark another round of active summer weather for the region, similar to recent events this July. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. Thunderstorm threats are expected to diminish after 6 p.m., but weather watches may continue into the evening.
