Amarillo, TX – Drivers in the Texas Panhandle may face flooded low-water crossings and gusty winds early Sunday before clearer skies return for Labor Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Flood Watch remains in effect through 7 a.m. Sunday. Excessive rainfall overnight could cause flooding in rivers, creeks, and poor drainage areas. Gusty winds up to 55 mph may also impact travel, knocking down tree limbs and blowing debris onto highways, including stretches of Interstate 40.

Cities at highest risk include Borger, Panhandle, Fritch, White Deer, Groom, Skellytown, and Amarillo. Residents should avoid driving across flooded roads and prepare for brief power outages from strong winds. Outdoor items should be secured.

Relief arrives by Sunday afternoon as showers taper off and skies gradually clear. Labor Day will bring mostly sunny skies with highs near 87, offering a dry and more comfortable holiday for outdoor plans. The Panhandle then stays mostly clear through Tuesday, with a brief chance of showers returning midweek.

Cooler nights will follow, with lows dipping into the 50s by midweek. Daytime highs will remain seasonal, hovering in the low- to mid-80s, supported by drier air moving into the region.

While storms may redevelop Wednesday into Thursday, no widespread severe threat is expected. Residents should still stay alert for quick changes, especially in rural and flood-prone locations.

Warnings remain possible if storms redevelop, but Labor Day travel looks safe across Amarillo and surrounding counties.
