Amarillo, TX – A narrow window for severe storms will open across the eastern Texas Panhandle this afternoon, with the highest risk developing between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, thunderstorms could begin forming as early as 3 p.m., though coverage will remain limited with only a few storms expected. The primary threat zone stretches east of Amarillo toward Wheeler, Shamrock, and Canadian.
Any storm that develops could quickly turn severe, producing hail up to golf ball size and wind gusts reaching 65 mph. While the tornado risk remains very low, brief damaging winds and large hail could impact travel along I-40 and nearby roadways with little warning.
Cities including Pampa, Borger, and Clarendon may also see isolated storm development, though activity is expected to move west to east and exit the area by early evening.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware this afternoon and monitor alerts, as storm development will be scattered but potentially intense. The severe threat will diminish after sunset as storms move out of the region.
