Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rain moving into the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Friday night could turn dangerous, with forecasters warning of localized flash flooding through early Saturday. Roads may quickly become impassable, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday across much of the region, including Amarillo, Dalhart, Dumas, Pampa, Guymon, and surrounding communities. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible, with the heaviest storms expected overnight.
Travel could become hazardous after dark as flooded roadways will be harder to spot. Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded streets and follow the warning: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Flash flooding may also impact rural routes and farm-to-market roads, particularly in areas where the ground is already saturated.
Residents are advised to charge phones and prepare for possible power interruptions during overnight storms. Those living near creeks and drainage areas should remain alert in case water levels rise quickly.
Flooding concerns are expected to ease after sunrise Saturday, though additional showers may linger into the weekend. The Weather Service cautions that more watches or warnings could be issued if heavy rain redevelops.
