Amarillo, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle could see dangerous weather late Saturday as severe thunderstorms develop, bringing the threat of 70 mph winds and quarter-size hail. Storms may begin as early as 3 p.m., with the greatest threat expected between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the storms carry a low but notable risk for severe impacts, especially in areas from Dalhart and Dumas east toward Pampa and Borger. The strongest cells could produce large hail capable of damaging vehicles and crops, as well as wind gusts strong enough to knock down branches and power lines.
Travelers along U.S. Highways 60, 87, and 287 should be prepared for sudden visibility drops and hazardous driving conditions if storms move through. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, keep phones charged, and monitor multiple weather alert sources throughout the evening.
Storm chances are expected to diminish by early Sunday morning, but forecasters warn that additional summer storm threats remain possible later in the week.
