Texas – Cool, crisp air lingers across the Panhandle this morning, but a rapid heat surge is already building that will push Amarillo toward triple digits within the next 48 hours.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures start near 49°F under clear skies, but a strong warming trend is underway. Highs climb into the upper 80s by midday, then surge to 96°F by Wednesday and peak near 100°F by Thursday afternoon. That puts the region 25 to 35 degrees above normal for late March.
Roadways like I-40 and US-287 stay dry and clear, but heat and wind will create new concerns. South winds strengthen through midweek, with gusts reaching 25 mph by Wednesday night. Drivers should prepare for sudden crosswinds, especially on open stretches west of Amarillo.
By Thursday, the heat intensifies under full sun. Pavement temperatures will rise quickly, and outdoor exposure becomes a concern during peak afternoon hours. Stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity.
A sharp pattern change arrives by Friday. Temperatures drop to near 61°F during the day, then fall further into the upper 30s by late night. North winds increase to 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, creating a noticeably colder feel and potential travel impacts.
Meteorologists are tracking this swing closely as part of a larger system bringing storms east of Texas. For the Panhandle, the story remains heat, wind, then a fast cooldown.
