Amarillo, Texas – Drivers across the Texas Panhandle should prepare for changing conditions as gusty winds return Friday, creating potential travel issues along major routes including I-40 and I-27 near Amarillo after a brief break tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, breezy conditions will ease this evening as winds relax under mostly clear skies. Another cold front will move through Friday, bringing renewed gusty winds with the potential for gusts exceeding 40 mph in parts of the Panhandle. While the probability of widespread 40 mph gusts remains low, isolated stronger gusts could develop during the late morning and afternoon.

The strongest winds are expected during peak daytime hours Friday, which could impact high-profile vehicles traveling east-west along I-40 and north-south on I-27, especially in open rural stretches near Vega, Canyon, and Dumas. Loose outdoor objects may also be blown around, creating localized hazards near roadways.

Temperatures will fluctuate sharply through the weekend, warming Thursday before cooling again Friday and Saturday behind the front. Despite the temperature swings, dry conditions will dominate, keeping visibility generally good outside of brief blowing dust in wind-prone areas.

Winds are expected to diminish again by Friday evening, but motorists are urged to remain alert for changing conditions. Additional wind advisories could be issued if gusts trend stronger than currently expected.
