Amarillo, Texas – Texas starts October with a summer-like punch as Amarillo heads toward 90 degrees by midweek, extending an unseasonably warm stretch. Drivers and outdoor workers should take precautions, as the heat and gusty winds may affect travel and daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, highs will climb steadily from the low 80s on Monday into the upper 80s by Wednesday. Thursday could peak near 90, with south winds gusting up to 20 mph. Conditions remain dry, but the heat could stress sensitive crops and outdoor animals if shade and water are limited.

Residents across Potter and Randall counties should expect bright, clear skies with no rain in sight. The lack of cloud cover will keep afternoon sun intense, especially along I-40, where heat buildup on pavement may challenge travelers. Southbound winds will strengthen by Wednesday, pushing dust and making high-profile vehicle travel more difficult at times.

Despite the heat, evenings will offer some relief, with lows dipping into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Cooler mornings and warmer afternoons will highlight the Panhandle’s early October pattern, creating wide daily temperature swings.

While the stretch looks calm compared to severe weather seasons, officials advise preparing for elevated fire risk later in the week. Dry conditions combined with gusty winds could make grassfires harder to control, particularly in rural areas east of Amarillo.

More hot, sunny days remain in the forecast as the first week of October continues. Updates will follow if winds or fire danger increase.
