Amarillo, Texas – Strong thunderstorms are hammering the southern Texas Panhandle this evening, bringing dangerous winds, heavy rainfall, and the risk of flash flooding across several counties. Areas near Amarillo, Clarendon, and Claude are under the greatest threat through at least 8 p.m., with storm cells intensifying quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, some storms are producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as one inch in diameter. Rainfall is falling at torrential rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour, raising serious concerns for localized flooding. Affected areas include Vega, Hereford, Wellington, and southern sections of Pampa.

Drivers should avoid flooded roads and delay non-essential travel. Emergency managers urge residents to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” as rapid water accumulation may cut off low-lying routes. Utility outages or damage to weaker structures are possible with these wind gusts.

Thunderstorms will remain active through 8 p.m., and additional watches or warnings may be issued if cells continue to develop or stall. Residents should monitor weather alerts closely this evening.
