Amarillo residents may want to keep rain gear handy as isolated storms could develop this weekend and return early next week. Travel across the Texas Panhandle, including stretches of Interstate 40, may be slowed by brief downpours or lightning.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, there’s a marginal chance of thunderstorms Saturday night with hail and gusty winds possible. The higher risk for unsettled weather returns Monday and Tuesday, when showers and storms could form during the afternoon and evening hours. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, the hazards remain enough to disrupt outdoor plans or slow evening commutes.
Saturday brings partly sunny skies with highs near 87 before storms may pop after 4 p.m. By Sunday, conditions turn sunny and warm again, pushing highs to the low 90s. Monday starts off partly cloudy before turning hot and breezy, with another chance for scattered showers late in the day.
Drivers should use caution during any storm activity, especially on highways such as I-40 and U.S. 287, where sudden wind gusts can make driving difficult. Keep phones charged, secure loose outdoor items, and have alternate routes in mind if storms develop.
Thunderstorm chances taper by midweek, leaving drier and cooler conditions for late September.
