Amarillo, TX – After weeks of mild fall weather, the Texas Panhandle is bracing for a sharp cooldown this weekend. According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Sunday could be the coldest day since summer ended, with highs struggling to reach the upper 40s to near 50°F.
The last time Amarillo failed to climb above 50 degrees was April 19, marking this as the most significant daytime cooldown in nearly seven months. Forecasters say the chill will arrive behind a strong cold front moving through Saturday, bringing a much colder and drier air mass into the region.
Most Panhandle communities — including Dalhart, Borger, Perryton, and Hereford — are expected to top out between 47°F and 52°F, while areas farther north could stay in the mid-40s. The NWS notes there’s a 5% chance that highs may not even reach those temperatures if the colder air mass deepens more than expected.
Residents should prepare for breezy, brisk conditions Sunday, especially in the morning and evening hours, before a gradual warming trend returns early next week.
