Amarillo, Texas – Localized flash flooding could return to the Texas Panhandle Friday evening as heavy thunderstorms are forecast to move through the region, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour expected in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the heaviest rainfall is likely between 4 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday. Affected areas include Amarillo, Dalhart, Dumas, Guymon, and Perryton—especially locations that received recent rainfall and remain saturated. A flash flooding probability of 5 to 15% covers much of the Panhandle.

Localized flash flooding, hazardous driving conditions, and potential overnight road closures are possible, particularly in low-lying or urban areas with poor drainage. Commuters and residents are urged to monitor alerts and avoid water-covered roadways. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” remains the key message from emergency officials.

If you live in flood-prone areas, ensure your phone alerts are enabled, charge devices ahead of time, and avoid non-essential travel during peak rainfall hours.

This remains a dynamic weather event. Additional alerts or flash flood warnings could be issued as storms develop.
