Amarillo, Texas – Thunderstorms are building across the Texas Panhandle this afternoon, bringing the risk of heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning through at least 4 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service in Amarillo reports cumulus clouds have developed across much of the region, with isolated showers already forming.

According to the NWS, the greatest concern is for fast-developing thunderstorms that could drop localized downpours and spark frequent lightning strikes. Travel along major highways, including I-40 and US-287, may be impacted by sudden visibility reductions and slick road conditions.

Communities from Amarillo to Borger, Dumas, Stratford, and Canadian should remain alert for rapidly changing weather. Outdoor events may be disrupted, and residents are urged to seek shelter indoors if thunder is heard. Strong gusts could also cause minor power outages and hazardous driving for high-profile vehicles.

Storm chances should taper off by early evening, though scattered cells may linger until sunset. Additional updates will be issued if conditions intensify.
