Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo reports that a band of moderate snow is moving through the southern Texas Panhandle, with the heaviest snowfall expected to continue southward overnight into early Thursday morning.
Snowfall rates may reach up to 0.1 inch per hour, with visibility reduced to one mile or less in heavier bursts. The peak timing for snow intensity is expected between now and 3 a.m., with light flurries continuing into mid-morning.
Communities including Amarillo, Claude, Clarendon, Wellington, and Hereford are likely to see slippery and snow-covered roads, particularly on bridges and untreated surfaces. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid travel if possible until conditions improve.
According to the NWS, even light snow accumulation combined with below-freezing temperatures can cause rapidly deteriorating road conditions overnight.
Residents are advised to stay tuned to local updates and check road conditions before heading out Thursday morning.
