Alpena, Michigan – Drivers across northeast Michigan could face slick highways and reduced visibility by late Tuesday evening as a winter system spreads snow, sleet and freezing rain across the region through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Storm Watch takes effect Tuesday evening and remains in place until Wednesday evening for Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Montmorency and Alpena counties. Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of combined snow and sleet, along with up to one tenth of an inch of ice. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph, leading to blowing snow and icy stretches on exposed roadways.

The Wednesday morning and evening commutes pose the highest risk. US-23 along the Lake Huron shoreline, I-75 near Cheboygan, and M-32 through Alpena County could turn slippery as precipitation transitions between snow and freezing rain. Rural roads and untreated surfaces will ice over first.

Residents should monitor updated statements as snowfall and ice totals become clearer. Consider adjusting travel plans, slow down on slick roads and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, water and a flashlight. Additional advisories or warnings may follow as the system strengthens.
