PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A surge of cold, dry air is sweeping into western Pennsylvania tonight, setting up the season’s first widespread frost for many inland valleys by early Thursday. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Frost Advisory from midnight to 9 a.m. for much of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio.

According to the NWS, a dry cold front passing through today will drop overnight lows into the mid-30s, cold enough for frost formation across counties including Allegheny, Butler, Washington, Beaver, and Westmoreland. The chill will be sharpest in sheltered valleys and rural areas north and east of Pittsburgh, where skies will clear and winds will ease overnight.

Gardeners and homeowners are urged to cover sensitive vegetation or bring potted plants indoors before nightfall. Pet owners should also ensure outdoor animals have shelter from the cold. Commuters may notice patchy frost on windshields early Thursday, especially along I-79, I-70, and U.S. 422 corridors.

Temperatures will rebound modestly Thursday afternoon under sunny skies, with highs reaching the upper 50s to low 60s. Warmer air returns this weekend as southerly breezes develop, bringing afternoon highs back near seasonal norms.
