CUMBERLAND, Md. — The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST Tuesday for western Maryland and eastern West Virginia, marking the first widespread winter event of the 2025–26 season.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will spread across the region after midnight Monday night, creating slippery road conditions and hazardous travel during the Tuesday morning commute.

Expected accumulations:

  • Snow/Sleet: 1–3 inches, locally up to 4 inches near the Mason-Dixon Line and higher terrain of Garrett County.
  • Ice: Up to 0.10 inch of glaze possible, particularly in valleys and sheltered locations.

While precipitation will begin mainly as snow, a transition to sleet and freezing rain is expected before tapering off by midday. In areas west of the Allegheny Front, upslope snow showers could persist through Tuesday afternoon, adding a coating to an inch of additional accumulation.

Timing & Impacts:

  • 1 a.m.–7 a.m.: Snow developing, quickly covering roads.
  • 7 a.m.–10 a.m.: Change to sleet/freezing rain, slippery travel during commute.
  • Late morning–afternoon: Gradual improvement as precipitation tapers; additional light snow in higher elevations.

Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and exercise caution on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
