Flintstone, MD – A Maryland State Police helicopter crew rescued an injured person Saturday afternoon after a fall from a tree stand in Greenridge State Forest, according to authorities.
At around 12:30 p.m. on November 8, Allegany County emergency personnel were dispatched to a wooded area of the state forest after reports of a person who had fallen approximately 15 feet. Due to difficult terrain and the seriousness of the injuries, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command was called in to perform an aerial hoist rescue.
According to Maryland State Police, Trooper 5, based in Cumberland, responded to the scene. A trooper-rescue technician was lowered into a small clearing through dense tree coverage, where the injured person was treated and secured onto an extraction platform.
Pilots maintained a steady 125-foot hover as the victim was hoisted safely into the AW-139 helicopter. The crew then transitioned into a medevac role and transported the patient directly to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
The Maryland State Police Aviation Command operates 10 AW-139 helicopters from seven bases across the state, providing round-the-clock medevac, search and rescue, and law enforcement support. Officials said successful missions like Saturday’s rely on regular proficiency training and coordination with local and federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Park Police.
