Albuquerque, N.M. – Damaging winds and large hail are possible this afternoon across far northeastern New Mexico, as a line of severe thunderstorms targets Union County through 9 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a slight risk zone covers the far northeast corner of the state, where storms could intensify quickly between 3 and 9 p.m. MDT. Forecasters warn of wind gusts strong enough to down trees or power lines, with hail that may reach severe limits along U.S. 56 and communities near Clayton.
Travelers should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, especially east of Springer and north toward the Oklahoma border. Power outages are possible if stronger storms develop. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
While the tornado threat remains low, damaging straight-line winds and hail pose the greatest risk through the evening.
Storms are expected to weaken after sunset, but additional weather alerts could be issued if conditions change.
