ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to sweep across western, central, and northern New Mexico this afternoon, with winds proving more disruptive than rainfall in many areas. Stronger storms will favor higher terrain west of Albuquerque, with gusty outflows extending into nearby valleys by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a surge of monsoon moisture will bring more widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms Friday and Saturday. The system is expected to cover much of the state, with locally heavy rainfall likely and an increased risk of flash flooding, particularly near recent burn scars.
Drivers along I-25 from Santa Fe to Las Vegas and U.S. 550 near Cuba could encounter sudden downpours and reduced visibility late Friday into Saturday. Emergency officials urge residents in flood-prone areas to avoid low-water crossings and remain prepared for rapid weather changes.
While abundant cloud cover may limit the strength of the most intense storms, forecasters warn that the flood threat will remain elevated through the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
