Albuquerque, NM – Explosive fire conditions will develop across much of New Mexico Thursday, where powerful winds and extremely dry air could allow any fire to spread rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from late Thursday morning through the evening for areas along and east of the central mountains, including Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Clines Corners, and Tucumcari. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, while humidity levels drop as low as 4 to 12 percent.

The combination of dry fuels, strong winds, and low humidity creates a high-end fire weather setup, especially across the Upper Rio Grande Valley and eastern plains. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and even small sparks from vehicles or equipment could ignite fast-moving fires.

Temperatures will soar Thursday, with some eastern communities nearing record highs before a sharp cold front sweeps through overnight. That front will bring a dramatic cooldown into Friday, with some areas dropping 15 to 40 degrees and winds shifting to the northeast.

Drivers along I-25 and I-40 should prepare for sudden crosswinds and areas of blowing dust Thursday night into early Friday, which may reduce visibility.

Fire concerns will continue into the weekend as dry thunderstorms develop, bringing lightning but little rainfall, especially across western New Mexico.
