Albuquerque, N.M. – Residents across central and northern New Mexico face a renewed flood threat as slow-moving thunderstorms target the region Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night, prompting a broad Flood Watch for much of the state, including Ruidoso, Glorieta Pass, Edgewood, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, excessive rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected, with the Flood Watch in effect from Tuesday afternoon through at least midnight Tuesday. The alert covers communities in the South Central Mountains, Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Estancia Valley, Central and South Central Highlands, Glorieta Mesa, and adjacent lowlands. The warning is especially urgent for areas near burn scars, such as the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon and Ruidoso fires, where runoff could quickly lead to dangerous flash flooding.

Low-lying neighborhoods, riverbanks, and normally dry arroyos may flood rapidly. Major roads like US 70 near Ruidoso, I-25 through Glorieta Pass, and NM 337 in the Manzano Mountains could see hazardous conditions. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through water-covered roads, keep cell phones charged, and prepare to move to higher ground if warnings are issued.

Flash Flood Watches remain in effect through midnight, and more advisories may follow if storms persist into Wednesday. Monitor local alerts and be ready to act fast.
