Albuquerque, N.M. – Storms will begin building across northern and western New Mexico this weekend, bringing the potential for heavy rain, lightning, and localized flash flooding. The most active period is expected between Saturday and Tuesday, when multiple rounds of storms could impact travel and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, isolated storms will continue across northwest New Mexico Friday before coverage increases over the northern mountains and Four Corners region on Saturday. Daily rainfall totals could top 1 inch in the Four Corners, while northeast New Mexico faces the greatest chance for more than 3 inches through midweek.

Central areas, including Albuquerque and the lower Rio Grande Valley, may remain drier until Tuesday, when storm coverage expands. Flash flooding is a growing concern for burn scar regions, particularly near Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon starting Saturday and in the Ruidoso area by early next week.

Residents are urged to monitor changing conditions, avoid low-lying roadways during heavy downpours, and be alert for rapid rises in creeks and arroyos. Strong winds and frequent lightning will also accompany storms, creating hazards for hikers and outdoor events.

Flood watches and additional advisories may be issued as rainfall ramps up.
