Albuquerque, New Mexico – A warm and quiet Saturday will give way to a sharp change as New Mexico enters a wetter, windier stretch beginning Sunday, bringing light mountain snow and widespread gusty winds into Monday. Higher elevations of the northern mountains could see travel slowdowns early Monday as snow develops above 8,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, snow showers will arrive Sunday night, with the heaviest pockets forming along the Tusas Mountains where accumulations may reach one to two inches. Light snow elsewhere in the northern mountains is expected to remain under one inch, though reduced visibility and slick spots are possible through Monday morning.
Gusts will play a major role statewide. Peak winds Sunday afternoon and again Monday morning may reach 45 to 55 mph, especially across western and north-central New Mexico. Blowing dust could briefly reduce visibility along stretches of I-40 and U.S. 550, and drivers of high-profile vehicles should use caution. Isolated showers may also develop across central New Mexico, including Albuquerque, late Sunday as the wetter pattern settles in for the week.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, limit unnecessary mountain travel, and allow extra time during the Monday commute. This active pattern is expected to persist through next week, with additional updates likely as systems evolve.
